In this session, participants will be introduced to resources and strategies to empower groups of students to take on the diverse roles necessary to design and build their own video games. The presentation will cover basic principles of game design and allow participants opportunities to engage in hands-on practice with free digital tools for coding (Scratch and Unity), art (Piskel and Inkscape), writing (Inklewriter and Google Forms), and music (GarageBand and Audacity). By the end of the session, participants will be able to code a simple interactive game, create “8 bit” pixel art, and compose a simple theme song, all using free, user-friendly digital resources. Participants will leave with project templates, resources, and ready-to-teach lesson plans.
